A row of four new-build residences in Pacific Heights needed a roof that would satisfy a strict planning brief on appearance and still handle a marine climate. The architect had specified a flat grey field with no visible fixings and a very narrow verge detail.

Galvanized steel to a planning-controlled elevation, with hand-formed verges and hidden gutters.
Panels were roll-formed on site to avoid a cross joint anywhere on the visible field. Verges, hips and the hidden gutter behind the parapet were hand-formed from the same coil, so the whole roof reads as one material. The fixing pattern was set out to the architect's module rather than to the panel's.
Salt air was the governing condition: every fastener, clip and flashing on the job is the same grade of stainless, because a mixed-metal detail on this coast fails at the joint within a decade. The narrow verge left almost no tolerance, so each of the four roofs was surveyed and set out individually.
